The government has stepped up efforts to dismantle criminal gangs across Kenya.
Authorities say some of these groups are becoming involved in political violence and could threaten national security ahead of the 2027 General Election.
A Ministry of Interior report shows that the number of identified criminal groups has increased from 89 to 109.
Western leads in number of gangs
Western Kenya has the highest number of criminal groups, with 38 gangs identified in the region.
Rift Valley follows with 22 groups, while Nairobi has 20.
Nyanza has 12 groups, while the Coast region has 11. Eastern has three groups, North Eastern has two, and Central has one.
The Interior Ministry warned that the spread of these groups remains a major security concern.
More than 1,800 suspects arrested
Government investigations have linked thousands of people to the criminal groups.
According to the report, authorities have arrested 1,827 suspects, including alleged goons, this year.
Trans Nzoia recorded the highest number of arrests at 491.
So far, courts have convicted 729 suspects. Another 716 cases remain before the courts.
The government says frequent unrest and raids involving criminal gangs have raised concerns about the growing threat.
Kindiki vows to fight criminal gangs
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the government would continue its crackdown on dangerous groups.
He said authorities would work with community elders to promote peace and discourage political violence.
“Just as the elders have brought together Mount Kenya, we will join hands with elders to calm other parts of Kenya, elders from Nyanza, Western, so that we can move away from politics of tribalism, people can look for their votes and peace,” Kindiki said.
Government targets political use of youth
Kindiki also called for the complete elimination of dangerous gangs in the Mount Kenya region.
As the spokesperson of Mount Kenya, he said he would work to maintain security across the region.
The Deputy President further warned against using young people and criminal groups for political purposes.
The government says it will continue taking action against groups that threaten peace and security as Kenya prepares for the 2027 elections.
