Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital has confirmed that a female patient who showed symptoms of Ebola tested negative for the virus.
The hospital announced the results on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following tests at the National Virology Reference Laboratory.
Patient Reported Ebola-Like Symptoms
The patient arrived at the hospital’s Emergency Department at 5am on Monday, October 12.
She had experienced body weakness, fever and an occasional dry cough for three weeks. Her condition worsened a day before admission, when she developed breathing difficulties and bleeding from body openings and puncture sites.
The patient reported no recent travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or Uganda. She also denied contact with anyone who had similar symptoms.
Hospital Takes Precautionary Measures
Medical staff assessed the patient and began treatment while investigating the possibility of an Ebola infection.
The hospital also introduced infection prevention measures to protect healthcare workers and other patients. Staff followed national guidelines for handling suspected Ebola cases.
The medical team collected samples and sent them to the National Virology Reference Laboratory for testing. The results ruled out Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Hospital Urges Staff to Remain Alert
Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Sammy Kilonzo assured staff that the hospital had taken the necessary steps to protect healthcare workers while providing care to the patient.
The hospital also praised its medical team, support staff, the Laikipia County Department of Health and other stakeholders for their response.
Management urged healthcare workers to remain vigilant and follow official updates from the hospital and relevant health authorities.
However, the hospital did not disclose the illness responsible for the patient’s symptoms or provide an update on her condition following the negative Ebola test.
