Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna says he is ready to work with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. According to the senator, removing President William Ruto from office is more important than their past political differences.
Open to Working Together
Speaking on Citizen TV’s The Explainer, Sifuna said the Linda Mwananchi movement will work with anyone who supports the Constitution and the rule of law.
He added that the movement is also open to anyone who wants President Ruto removed from office.
“We will work with everyone who believes in these things, the Constitution and the rule of law. We will work with anyone who believes that Ruto does not deserve an extra day in office,” Sifuna said.
Defends Impeachment Vote
Meanwhile, Sifuna defended his decision to support Gachagua’s impeachment. He said he voted for the motion because of Gachagua’s alleged interference in the management of Nairobi City County.
According to Sifuna, Gachagua has already faced the consequences of his actions through impeachment.
“Nothing has changed. As a lawyer, I will tell you there is a rule against double jeopardy. He paid for his mistakes. He was impeached. What else do you want me to do, beat him?” he said.
Gachagua’s Role
At the same time, Sifuna said Gachagua now sees President Ruto as a threat to the country. He also noted that the former deputy president has pledged to support efforts to remove him from office.
Furthermore, the senator argued that Gachagua carries greater responsibility because he helped President Ruto win power.
“He feels largely responsible for Ruto being in power. That means he also has a greater responsibility in removing him, and I agree with that,” Sifuna said.
Rejects Bribery Claims
Sifuna also dismissed claims that he accepted a bribe to support the impeachment.
Instead, he said he had openly criticised Gachagua long before the impeachment vote. Those concerns included Gachagua’s alleged interference in the running of Nairobi City County.
“I did not need any inducement to support the impeachment because I had already spoken publicly against some of his actions, including his interference in the running of Nairobi City County,” he said.
Response to Junet’s Remarks
His remarks came after comments by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed.
Earlier, Junet claimed that some lawmakers received bribes to support Gachagua’s impeachment. He made the allegations during an ODM meeting in Kakamega on July 26, 2026.
