Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of mental health researcher Dr Victoria Mutiso in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said homicide detectives made the arrests after following several leads. The team used witness interviews, forensic analysis and targeted operations during the investigation.
Suspects Held as Investigations Continue
According to the DCI, detectives also searched premises linked to people of interest. They recovered items believed to be important to the case.
The recovered exhibits are undergoing forensic examination as investigators work to establish what happened.
The DCI confirmed that the two suspects remain in custody. They are assisting detectives with ongoing investigations.
Dr Mutiso Killed in Targeted Attack
Dr Mutiso, who served as a researcher and director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB), was shot dead during her morning commute.
The attack happened at around 9 a.m. near the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road in Nairobi.
Witnesses said the attackers appeared to have planned the incident. They reported that a Toyota Prado was parked at the junction when the Uber vehicle carrying Dr Mutiso arrived.
Moments later, a motorcycle carrying three men approached the vehicle. One of the attackers allegedly opened fire and shot Dr Mutiso before escaping on the motorcycle.
The Toyota Prado also left the scene shortly after the shooting.
Police Collect Evidence
The Uber driver rushed Dr Mutiso to the Kenyatta National Hospital Emergency Centre in an attempt to save her life. However, doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
After the incident, homicide detectives and forensic officers visited the hospital and began collecting evidence.
Police detained the Uber vehicle as a key exhibit. Ballistic experts recovered two spent cartridges from inside the car.
Additionally, investigators are reviewing mobile phones belonging to Dr Mutiso and the driver. They hope the data will help them trace their movements and communications before the shooting.
The investigation into the murder remains ongoing as detectives work to uncover the motive behind the attack.
