Police are investigating the death of a female officer at Kisii Central Police Station after colleagues found her dead inside the station.
The officer, identified as Bosibori, reported for duty on Monday afternoon. She started her shift with another officer as scheduled.
Kisii Central Sub-County Police Commander Musa Omari Imamai said the two officers returned to the station later that night. Bosibori then asked for permission to use the washroom. Instead, she entered an unused communications office and locked the door.
When she did not return, fellow officers went to check on her. After getting no response, they forced the door open. They found her with what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
The incident has deeply affected officers at the station. Many are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their colleague.
Imamai said the 42-year-old officer showed no obvious signs of emotional distress during her shift. He also said investigators did not find a note or any other clue that could explain her actions.
Officers moved her body to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary. A post-mortem examination will help determine the exact cause of death.
Detectives are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The case has also renewed concerns about the mental well-being of police officers and the need for stronger mental health support within the service.
