A man accused of killing a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has finally taken a plea.
The case faced delays for months because of questions about his mental condition.
Kennedy Kalombotole appeared before Justice Diana Kavedza at the High Court in Nairobi on Thursday. He denied the murder charge.
The court reviewed a report from three psychiatrists at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital. The experts confirmed that Kalombotole was fit to stand trial.
Court Clears Way for Trial
Justice Kavedza read the murder charge against Kalombotole. Prosecutors accused him of killing Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni on February 6 and 7, 2025.
The incident allegedly took place at Ward 7B of Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi County. However, Kalombotole denied the accusations.
The trial delayed for more than a year as doctors gave different opinions about his mental state.
Earlier, the court considered sending Kalombotole to South Africa for another assessment. However, it later appointed three Kenyan psychiatrists to examine him.
The medical team found that Kalombotole understood the charges. They also confirmed that he could take part in the trial.
Trial Dates Set
The prosecution said it plans to call about 20 witnesses. The witnesses include the pathologist who performed the post-mortem examination.
However, Justice Kavedza asked prosecutors to reduce the number of witnesses to about 16. She said this would help the case move faster.
The court scheduled the hearing to begin on October 26, 2026.
In addition, the judge directed the victim’s family lawyer to present any concerns during the trial.
Court Issues Custody Orders
Meanwhile, Justice Kavedza ordered prison officials to provide Kalombotole with a diabetic diet. She also directed them to ensure he takes his medication.
The judge also asked both the prosecution and defence teams to file submissions on his bail request.
Finally, the trial will proceed with witness testimony and other evidence after the court settled the issue of Kalombotole’s mental fitness.
