Former Wajir Woman Rep Fatuma Ali sworn in as PSC commissioner

Former Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Ibrahim Ali has taken office as the new female non-Member Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula swore in Ali on Thursday. She takes over from Rachel Ameso, whose term in office ended recently.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly approved her appointment on Wednesday. The Senate had earlier approved her nomination on October 1.

Fatuma vows to work with fellow commissioners

After taking the oath, Ali promised to respect her new role and work closely with other PSC commissioners.

In addition, she said consensus would guide her approach to decision-making within the Commission.

“I am a person who believes in consensus in commissions. Consensus is very crucial in decision-making, and I am committed to working on consensus at all times,” Ali said.

Wetang’ula welcomes new commissioner

Meanwhile, Speaker Wetang’ula welcomed Ali to the Parliamentary Service Commission.

He said she had joined the Commission at a time when it was working to strengthen Parliament and uphold integrity.

Furthermore, the Speaker said the PSC wanted to improve public understanding of Parliament’s work.

Wetang’ula also urged Ali to use her experience in public service to support the Commission’s work.

“You have been in this Parliament with us. You have a rich history behind you, and I have no doubt whatsoever that you will add value to this Commission,” he said.

Muthama praises Ali’s experience

PSC Commissioner Johnson Muthama also welcomed Ali to the Commission.

According to Muthama, her experience in public service had prepared her for the responsibilities that come with the position.

Ali’s appointment follows Article 127(2)(d) of the Constitution of Kenya.

Under the provision, Parliament must appoint one man and one woman with experience in public affairs who do not serve as Members of Parliament.

Role of the Parliamentary Service Commission

Article 127 of the Constitution establishes the Parliamentary Service Commission.

Among other responsibilities, the PSC provides services and facilities that support the efficient and effective functioning of Parliament.

As a result, Ali will now work with other commissioners as the Commission continues to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
