A court in Bondo has released 17 suspects arrested over the disruption of a public participation forum on the proposed nuclear power plant in Bondo Sub-County.
The suspects appeared before Bondo Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti. He granted each suspect a cash bail of Ksh.15,000 or a bond of Ksh.50,000 while investigations continue.
Police arrested the group after a public participation meeting in Central Sakwa on Friday last week. Investigators say the suspects disrupted the meeting, attacked government officials, and damaged vehicles in the officials’ motorcade.
Police arrested the suspects a day later in Ka’John, Lenya, and Nango trading centres.
The prosecution asked the court to keep the suspects in custody for more time. Prosecutors said investigators were examining possible terrorism-related offences.
However, Magistrate Ogoti rejected the request. He ruled that the prosecution had not provided enough evidence to justify further detention.
The court ordered the suspects to report to the local Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office on July 28, July 30, and August 3, 2026. They must comply as investigators complete their inquiries.
After the investigation, police will forward the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). The ODPP will then decide whether to file charges against the suspects.
