Government-allied leaders from Mt Kenya have criticised ODM leaders over calls for a 50-50 government arrangement.
They have also rejected demands for the Deputy President’s position. Instead, they have defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The MPs said Kindiki remains secure in government. They dismissed claims that some leaders want him removed.
MPs Reject ODM Demands
The leaders include Igamba Ng’ombe MP Patrick Munene, Mwea MP Mary Maingi and Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari.
According to the MPs, ODM leaders did not help form the Kenya Kwanza administration. Therefore, they should not demand key government positions.
Speaking in Mwea, Munene said ODM joined the administration through the broad-based arrangement. He argued that the party should focus on its own affairs.
Additionally, he criticised National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed for seeking a bigger role in government.
“Junet Mohamed did not elect this government. He should not demand the DP seat. Let him focus on ODM,” Munene said.
Leaders Rally Behind Kindiki
Meanwhile, Munene said they will continue supporting Kindiki within government.
Furthermore, he expressed confidence in Kindiki’s political future. He said they would support him if he chooses to run for president in 2032.
“We have no fear. We will fight for him even in his 2032 presidential bid. Kindiki will be on the presidential ballot in 2032,” Munene said.
MPs Challenge Gachagua’s Claims
The leaders also dismissed comments by DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua.
Gachagua had said he would guide Mt Kenya residents on their political choices.
However, Munene disagreed. He said Gachagua should not direct the region after leaving office through impeachment.
Leaders Debate Mt Kenya Unity
Meanwhile, Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari defended Kindiki’s role in government.
He said the Deputy President has not raised complaints about his duties.
At the same time, Gitari criticised Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku over comments suggesting that Mt Kenya should split into two regions.
According to Gitari, such divisions could weaken the region’s political strength.
Kirinyaga Backs Mt Kenya East Identity
In addition, Mwea MP Mary Maingi supported Kindiki’s leadership.
She described him as an important figure in the Mt Kenya region.
Similarly, Maingi insisted that Kirinyaga remains part of Mt Kenya East.
She explained that residents have historically depended on Embu for some government services.
Finally, she noted that the Huduma Centre in Mwea has improved access to public services.
