Migori Fisherman Killed After Alleged Gambling Dispute
Police are investigating the death of a fisherman after an alleged dispute over gambling winnings in Migori County.
Muhuru Central Location Chief Olga Raden said the incident involved two fishermen. She identified the suspect as Tanzanian national Semeni Rongeri. The deceased was identified only as James.
According to Raden, the two argued over a card game they had played several days earlier. She said preliminary investigations show the suspect became angry after James won the game.
Raden alleged that the argument later turned violent. She said the suspect attacked James with a sharp weapon.
Doctors treated James at a nearby hospital. However, he later died from his injuries.
Police Rescue Suspect From Angry Crowd
After the incident, members of the public turned on the suspect. They assaulted him before police arrived.
Officers rescued the suspect and took him into custody. He also received treatment for his injuries.
Police are now investigating the incident to establish what happened.
Calls to Control Gambling Activities
Meanwhile, Sumba Beach Management Unit Chairperson Mark Otieno has urged the government to regulate gambling activities at the beach and in Muhuru Bay town.
He said card games have become more common in the area. He also warned that disputes linked to gambling have caused serious incidents, including deaths.
Otieno described the fisherman’s death as tragic. He urged authorities to introduce measures that will help prevent similar incidents in the future.
