Kenya enjoyed another successful day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Diana Wanza won silver in the women’s 10,000 metres. Lilian Odira also qualified for the 800m semi-finals.
Wanza Claims Kenya’s Second Medal
Wanza produced a strong run to win Kenya’s second medal of the Games.
She finished second in 31:50.13. Australia’s Rose Davies took gold in 31:39.32.
The silver medal extended Kenya’s strong record in the women’s 10,000m. However, the country is still chasing its first Commonwealth gold in the event since Joyce Chepkirui’s victory in 2014.
Miriam Chebet and Rebecca Mwangi also represented Kenya in the race. Chebet finished seventh, while Mwangi placed tenth.
The result capped another strong performance for Wanza. The African champion arrived in Glasgow after winning the continental 10,000m title earlier this year.
Odira Progresses with Ease
Later, reigning world champion Lilian Odira booked her place in the women’s 800m semi-finals.
Odira led her heat from the start. She crossed the finish line comfortably and secured automatic qualification.
The Migori-born runner earned her Commonwealth Games place after winning a third straight national 800m title earlier this year.
She is now chasing her first Commonwealth Games medal. A podium finish would add to the world title she won in Tokyo last year.
Team Kenya Gains Momentum
Wanza’s silver and Odira’s qualification gave Team Kenya another boost.
The athletics programme is still in its early stages. Kenya will now look to build on the strong start and win more medals in the remaining events.
