Seven people died and eight others suffered serious injuries in a road accident at Mlima Punda near Lessos Junction on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
Ainabkoi Deputy Police Commander Charles Getende said the crash occurred on Friday morning. It involved a Mercedes Actros trailer and two Toyota Hiace matatus.
Trailer Hits Two Matatus
According to police, the trailer was travelling towards Eldoret.
However, the driver tried to overtake while descending a hill.
As a result, the trailer crashed head-on into two oncoming matatus.
Consequently, the impact killed one matatu driver and six passengers on the spot.
Rescuers Rush to the Scene
Soon after the crash, emergency responders and local authorities arrived at the scene.
They rescued the survivors from the wreckage. Afterwards, they rushed the injured to Burnt Forest Hospital and Plateau Hospital for treatment.
Students Among Those Killed
Police said some of the victims were students.
They were travelling home after schools closed for the holidays.
Meanwhile, investigators have begun examining the crash. They will also seek to establish the exact cause of the accident.
