Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has compared the growing divisions within Kenya’s ruling coalition to the sinking of the Titanic.
In a post on X, Kuria said the government is heading into political trouble. However, he argued that senior leaders remain focused on internal power struggles instead of national issues.
“The movie is The Titanic. The ship has already hit the iceberg and is slowly sinking,” Kuria wrote.
He added that most passengers had accepted the situation. Meanwhile, others were already looking for a way to escape.
Kuria Criticises Coalition Leaders
Kuria criticised two groups within the ruling alliance.
According to him, one group continued with business as usual despite the warning signs. Meanwhile, another group focused on political battles and powerful positions.
As a result, he suggested that some leaders are ignoring the country’s growing political challenges.
Alliance Tensions Continue to Grow
Political observers linked Kuria’s remarks to tensions within the ruling coalition.
In particular, they pointed to disagreements between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
At the same time, competition for Cabinet positions and other leadership roles has intensified ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Consequently, Kuria’s comments suggest that political rivalries are taking priority over governance and public service.
ODM Maintains Its Stand
Meanwhile, coalition negotiations continue to attract public attention.
Recently, ODM declared that the deputy president’s position is non-negotiable in any future agreement with UDA.
In addition, the party wants an equal share of government if the two sides form a political alliance.
Arati Names Potential Candidates
Speaking during ODM’s delegates meeting in Turkana on July 29, 2026, Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati reaffirmed the party’s position.
He said ODM would not surrender the deputy president’s slot to UDA.
Furthermore, Arati argued that ODM has several qualified leaders for the role.
He named Energy Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and ODM leader Oburu Odinga as possible candidates.
Finally, he said the party will choose its preferred candidate internally if coalition talks succeed.
