The East African Business Council (EABC) has urged East African Community (EAC) member states to speed up efforts to open up trade in services across the region.
The business council also wants stronger protection for service providers operating in different EAC countries.
EABC raises concerns over delays
The EABC said delays in implementing commitments under Annex V of the EAC Common Market Protocol are slowing efforts to create a fully integrated regional services market.
The council wants Partner States to move faster in implementing the agreements they have already made.
It said faster implementation would make it easier for businesses and professionals to provide services across the region.
Seven sectors targeted for liberalisation
Under the EAC Common Market Protocol, member states agreed to allow the free movement of services.
They also agreed to gradually open up seven priority sectors.
These sectors include:
- Business services
- Communication services
- Distribution services
- Education services
- Financial services
- Tourism and travel services
- Transport services
The EABC said full implementation of these commitments would strengthen regional trade and create more opportunities for businesses and service providers.
It also argued that removing unnecessary barriers would help the EAC build a more connected and competitive regional economy.
