A Nairobi court has allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to hold two suspects for four more days as detectives continue investigating the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso.
DCI seeks more time to complete investigations
The DCI had asked the court for seven additional days to detain Daniel Mwangi and Kevin Kinuthia.
Detectives said they had received new information from the two suspects and others in the case.
The investigators also told the court that they were waiting for forensic and financial reports.
They further said they had identified additional witnesses who could provide more information about the murder.
However, the court granted the DCI four days to complete the remaining investigations.
Homicide investigator Romana Odour told the court that police arrested the two suspects on August 7, 2026.
The suspects appeared in court on August 10. Investigators then obtained an initial 30-day detention order.
Odour said detectives had not completed the investigation because the suspects provided new information.
The new details required investigators to conduct further inquiries.
The DCI is also waiting for cybercrime and forensic reports from the National Forensic Laboratory.
Detectives expect the reports to help them examine information recovered from mobile phones seized during the arrests.
Investigators are also awaiting a financial report from the Financial Reporting Centre.
The report will help detectives examine the financial aspects of the case.
The court also heard that investigators had identified more witnesses after questioning the suspects.
Some of the witnesses live outside Nairobi. They are yet to record their statements.
The investigation has also expanded as detectives continue looking for other alleged accomplices.
The DCI told the court that some suspects remain at large while others are already in custody.
Several suspects linked to the case are facing separate legal proceedings.
Elijah Kibelion Kimoi has already faced a murder charge in Milimani HCCRCE No. 005 of 2026.
The court has scheduled his plea for September 23.
DCI cites flight risk and safety concerns
The DCI argued that releasing the two suspects could affect the ongoing investigation.
Detectives said the suspects could flee before the police complete their inquiries.
The investigators also raised concerns about the suspects’ safety.
They told the court that the case had attracted significant public attention and anger.
According to the affidavit, members of the public and the deceased’s family now know the suspects’ identities.
The DCI said this could expose them to retaliation or mob justice if the court released them.
Investigators therefore asked the court to allow them more time to keep the suspects in custody.
They said the extra time would allow detectives to pursue other suspects and record statements from new witnesses.
The investigators also need time to analyse forensic reports and follow up financial leads.
The State asked the court to consider the circumstances as compelling reasons under Article 49(1)(f) and (g) of the Constitution.
It also relied on Section 36A of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Dr Mutiso murder investigation
Dr Mutiso died after a shooting in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area on the morning of July 29, 2026.
Police have since arrested several people in connection with the murder.
Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her two children, Chris Mulo and Angella Mulo, rank among those accused of organising the killing.
The prosecution links the alleged motive to a long-running family property dispute.
Police Constable Elijah Kimoi and Collins Bett Kiplangat also face accusations over the alleged murder plot.
Detectives have also accused several civilian suspects of taking part in the plan.
The investigation remains ongoing as police pursue additional suspects and gather more evidence.
