- Prosecutors have outlined the witnesses they plan to call in the murder trial over Albert Ojwang’s death in police custody.
Family members will testify that Ojwang was healthy when he was arrested. The prosecution will also call the officers who arrested him and took him to Central Police Station. The pathologist who carried out the post-mortem examination will also testify.
According to the prosecution, the medical report shows Ojwang suffered injuries that do not match the first police account. Police had claimed he died after hitting his head against a wall.
The prosecution will also present CCTV and forensic experts. They are expected to explain Ojwang’s movements inside the police station. They will also present evidence of alleged tampering with CCTV footage after his death.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) says the evidence will show the accused acted together and played different roles in Ojwang’s death. Prosecutors also claim they later tried to hide what had happened.
The prosecution argues that Ojwang’s death was intentional and not an accident. It says every Kenyan has the right to be safe while in police custody. It also says police officers must be held accountable for any abuse of power.
Former Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam and the five other accused have denied the murder charges. The trial will continue as the prosecution begins presenting its evidence.
