Ruto is set to begin a development tour of the Gusii region as his administration prepares to inspect and launch projects across Nyamira and Kisii counties.

The visit is expected to focus on roads, education, housing, health, transport and other infrastructure projects, while also drawing political attention because of the region’s importance ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Ruto to begin tour in Nyamira

The President is expected to start his visit in Nyamira County, where his programme includes a church service at Matongo ELCK Church before a series of development engagements.

He is scheduled to commission the Tombe-Isinta-Gitaru Road and launch the upgrading to bitumen standard of the Bondeni-Magombo and Machururiati-Esani roads.

The road projects form part of wider government efforts to improve transport links and access to markets across the county.

Gusii Stadium among projects under review

Ruto is also expected to inspect ongoing works at Gusii Stadium, which is undergoing a major upgrade.

The project was launched earlier in the year and is intended to transform the facility into a 14,000-seater stadium with a FIFA-standard pitch, covered terraces and improved spectator facilities.

The President had previously indicated that the stadium should be completed before the end of the year.

Education and health projects feature prominently

Other projects highlighted ahead of the tour include the proposed Nyamira University and the Kisii Regional Cancer Centre.

Nyamira University is reported to be about 60 per cent complete, while the cancer centre is expected to strengthen specialist health services for residents of the wider western Kenya region.

Plans to upgrade Kisii Airstrip and expand affordable housing, rural electrification and water infrastructure are also expected to feature during the visit.

SGR extension remains part of development agenda

The proposed extension of the Standard Gauge Railway through the Gusii region is another major project being highlighted by government-allied leaders.

Plans under discussion include routing the railway through Magwagwa in Nyamira as part of a broader extension towards western Kenya.

The project remains at the proposal and planning stage and has not yet been completed.

Political attention turns to Matiang’i

Beyond development, the tour is expected to attract significant political attention because former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has been building his profile in the region.

Matiang’i is regarded as an influential political figure in Kisii and Nyamira and has been positioning himself within the opposition ahead of 2027.

Ruto’s allies in the region have argued that development projects demonstrate the benefits of working with the national government.

North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko has said elected leaders should engage with the government to secure development for their constituencies.

Gusii remains important voting bloc

Kisii and Nyamira counties together have close to one million registered voters, making the region politically significant ahead of the next election.

In the 2022 presidential election, Ruto received about 35 per cent of votes cast in the region, while Raila Odinga secured roughly 65 per cent.

The coming tour will therefore combine government project inspections with intense political attention as different camps compete for influence in the region.

Ruto is expected to spend several days in Nyamira and Kisii, with additional project launches and announcements expected during the visit.
