Liverpool lose perfect European record

Liverpool arrived in Istanbul having won their opening three Champions League matches, but that run ended after a poor defensive display against Fenerbahce.

Trey Nyoni gave the visitors the lead in the 25th minute, only for Mason Greenwood to equalize four minutes later with a deflected free-kick that wrong-footed goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alexander Isak restored Liverpool’s advantage in the 69th minute after heading home Cody Gakpo’s cross.

The lead lasted just four minutes.

Archie Brown reacted quickest at the far post to make it 2-2 before Vedat Muriqi completed the comeback with a 79th-minute header.

The defeat leaves Liverpool on nine points after four league-phase matches.

Kuyt gets victory over former club

Fenerbahce’s result carried extra significance for interim coach Dirk Kuyt, who previously spent six years as a Liverpool player.

The Turkish side had entered the match without a victory in this season’s Champions League league phase, having drawn with Roma and Slavia Prague and suffered a heavy defeat to Aston Villa.

Their victory over Liverpool moved them onto five points and revived their hopes of progressing.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola admitted afterwards that his side needed to defend better after twice allowing Fenerbahce back into the contest.

Como produce historic nine-goal display

While Liverpool struggled in Istanbul, Como delivered the night’s most extraordinary performance in France.

Cesc Fabregas’ side demolished Lens 9-1, equalling the largest winning margin in Champions League history.

Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick and also provided an assist as the Italian club ran riot.

Nico Paz, Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli were also on the scoresheet.

Ruben Aguilar scored Lens’ only goal.

The victory moved Como to fourth in the league-phase standings on nine points.

It also continued an impressive European campaign after their earlier 4-1 victory over Manchester United.

Real Madrid stay perfect

Real Madrid maintained their perfect Champions League record with a dramatic 3-2 victory over AEK Athens.

The Spanish giants were forced to come from behind twice before Federico Valverde scored the winner in stoppage time.

Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe had earlier found the net as Madrid moved to 12 points from four matches.

Haaland rescues Manchester City

Manchester City also required a late winner to secure three points.

Erling Haaland scored in the 78th minute as City edged RB Leipzig 3-2 after twice seeing their lead cancelled out.

The victory moved City onto nine points after four matches.

Arsenal continue strong Champions League run

Arsenal maintained their strong start with a 2-1 victory away to Slavia Prague.

Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres scored for the Gunners before the hosts pulled one back late in the match.

The result lifted Arsenal to 10 points and third place in the league phase.

Elsewhere, Porto beat Napoli 4-1, Borussia Dortmund defeated Real Betis 2-1, Club Brugge won 2-1 at PSV Eindhoven and Viking Stavanger claimed a 4-1 victory over Sabah.

For Liverpool, attention now turns to their next European fixture away to Club Brugge on November 25 as they look to recover from their first Champions League setback of the campaign.
