Gachagua has urged Kalenjin political leaders and voters to support KANU chairman Gideon Moi as opposition figures intensify efforts to build alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said his political differences with President William Ruto should not be interpreted as hostility towards the wider Kalenjin community.

Gachagua backs Gideon Moi’s political role

Gachagua said Gideon Moi should be supported as he seeks to strengthen his position in national politics and within the opposition.

He argued that leaders from the Rift Valley should be free to work with opposition figures without being viewed as acting against their community.

The remarks come as Moi continues to engage political leaders and elders while repositioning KANU ahead of the next election cycle.

Rift Valley politics remain competitive

The Rift Valley remains one of the most politically significant regions in Kenya and has traditionally been a strong base for President Ruto.

Gachagua has increasingly sought to draw a distinction between his criticism of Ruto and his relationship with Kalenjin voters.

He has maintained that his disagreements are focused on the President’s leadership and political direction rather than the community that has strongly backed him.

Gideon Moi seeks renewed political influence

Gideon Moi has in recent months increased his political engagements as KANU seeks to rebuild its national presence.

His political position has attracted renewed attention following meetings with leaders from different camps and consultations with Kalenjin elders.

The KANU chairman has also faced questions over his past engagement with Ruto, including his decision to withdraw from the Baringo Senate race after discussions with the President.

Opposition alliances take shape

Gachagua’s remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are still debating how to structure a possible joint challenge to Ruto in 2027.

Different opposition groups have been holding separate meetings and rallies, raising questions about whether they will eventually settle on a single presidential candidate.

Gachagua has repeatedly insisted that the opposition remains united despite disagreements over strategy, leadership and voter mobilization.

His latest appeal for Kalenjin leaders to support Moi adds another dimension to those efforts as opposition politicians look for ways to broaden their support in regions currently dominated by the ruling coalition.
