Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have established themselves among Europe’s top clubs after winning the Champions League twice in a row.
Now, Luis Enrique’s side want to make history by winning the trophy for a third consecutive season.
“Doing the treble is the objective, but we know it’s going to be very difficult,” PSG captain Marquinhos said.
He added that the team expects several challenges along the way.
PSG have transformed under Luis Enrique
PSG spent years chasing success in Europe without winning the Champions League.
However, their fortunes changed after Luis Enrique took charge in 2023.
The French club reached the semi-finals during his first season. Then, they became even stronger after Kylian Mbappe left the club in 2024.
PSG no longer depended on one or two superstar players. Instead, they developed a balanced squad.
As a result, they won their first Champions League title in 2025.
They produced a stunning performance in the final. PSG beat Inter Milan 5-0 to lift the trophy.
The following season, they defended their title. They beat Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties in the final in Budapest.
That achievement made PSG only the second team to retain the Champions League trophy since the competition adopted its modern format in 1992.
A third title would make history
Winning the Champions League three times in a row would take PSG into an even more exclusive group.
Real Madrid achieved the feat under Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018.
Before that, Ajax won three straight European Cups under Johan Cruyff in the 1970s.
Bayern Munich also achieved the same feat under Franz Beckenbauer during that decade.
Real Madrid, led by Alfredo Di Stefano, went even further by winning five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960.
Therefore, PSG now have the chance to join some of the greatest teams in European football history.
However, the challenge has become tougher because of the demands of the modern Champions League.
PSG played 17 matches during each of their last two title-winning campaigns.
PSG have plenty of attacking power
When PSG play at their best, they are one of the most exciting teams in Europe.
Their attack combines speed, skill and movement.
Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia lead the attacking threat.
Meanwhile, full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes provide additional attacking power.
In midfield, Portuguese playmaker Vitinha controls the game.
He works alongside PSG’s other midfielders to help the team dominate possession and control matches.
Fixture congestion could hurt PSG
Despite their success, PSG face one major concern.
The club played 121 competitive matches over the past two seasons.
They also had only around three weeks of rest between the two campaigns because of the Club World Cup.
Furthermore, many PSG players featured in major international tournaments in 2024.
They then had another shortened summer break because of the World Cup.
That heavy schedule could explain PSG’s slow start to the current season.
However, the club remains the favourite to win Ligue 1.
Their advantage over other French teams allows Luis Enrique to rest important players when necessary.
As a result, PSG can focus more on keeping their key players fresh for Europe.
PSG face a tough Champions League schedule
PSG have received a relatively favourable start to their European campaign.
They will begin against Slovan Bratislava.
However, the competition will become much tougher in October.
PSG will travel to face Manchester City before hosting Barcelona.
Those matches could provide an early test of their chances of winning a third straight title.
PSG make changes to their squad
PSG have also made several changes to their squad.
The club sold Bradley Barcola to Liverpool for a significant fee.
Goncalo Ramos, Lee Kang-in and Ibrahim Mbaye also left the club.
However, PSG have added quality to their squad.
Maghnes Akliouche joined after representing France at the World Cup.
The club also signed Ferran Torres from Barcelona.
Torres previously worked with Luis Enrique while playing for Spain.
“He was like a footballing father for me when I played for him in the national team,” Torres said after joining PSG.
Luis Enrique remains PSG’s key figure
Luis Enrique has become one of the most important figures at PSG.
The Spanish coach recently signed a new contract that will keep him in Paris until 2030.
He says he remains highly motivated despite already winning two Champions League titles.
“It is the first time I have stayed four years at the same club, and I am more motivated than I was in my first year,” Enrique said.
For PSG, that hunger could prove crucial.
The club now have a chance to achieve something very few teams have managed.
However, winning three Champions League titles in a row will require them to overcome a demanding schedule and Europe’s strongest clubs.
